Article about Widow Benefits
Dan Shea, who lost his brother in Iraq, has written an article in the editorial section on the New York Times today. He writes about the unfair SBP/DIC offset. It is good to know there are others out there writing about this unfair law. We will see if it catches the attention of our lawmakers. Per National Military Family Association's "Issues and Actions" pdf from 2005:
"Survivor Benefits: NMFA will promote benefits, entitlements and programs that are responsive to both the emerging and long term needs of survivors.
• Monitor the implementation of the elimination of the age-62 offset to the Survivor Benefit Plan and
promote education to retirees and survivors regarding the changes.
• Promote enhancements to benefits for survivors of all those who die on active duty to ensure the total
benefits package meets the needs of these families.
• Seek legislation to provide full Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) benefits plus Dependency Indemnity Compensation (DIC) benefits for survivors of servicemembers whose deaths were service connected.
• Identify the needs of surviving children and promote programs and initiatives to support those needs.
• Promote comprehensive training of Casualty Assistance officers, family support providers and family readiness volunteers, especially in the area of
benefits and support services vailable for surviving family members.
• Promote the establishment of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) advisory committee for survivors.
• Promote coordination between DoD and VA to support survivors."
